Embroidery vs Screen Printing: How to Choose

Embroidery vs Screen Printing: How to Choose

The question we get more than almost any other: should I screen print or embroider? Both are decoration methods for apparel and both have a long history of doing their jobs well. The right answer depends on the garment, the design, the quantity, and how the apparel will be used. Here’s the rundown.

Screen printing is for big designs on flat fabric

If your design covers a large area — a full chest, a back graphic, a sleeve — screen printing is almost always the answer. The ink lies on the surface of the fabric, so big, bold designs look bold. Multi-color graphics are economical at scale. T-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, and any flat-faced fabric are screen printing’s natural home.

Embroidery is for premium, smaller marks

Embroidery works best on a smaller scale: a chest logo on a polo, a hat patch, a jacket back panel. Stitched thread feels more premium than ink. It’s especially good on heavier or textured fabrics like fleece, where ink might crack or look strange. Embroidery is what you want on uniforms, staff polos, hats, and anything where the apparel is meant to feel like a real piece of company-issued gear.

Cost differences

Embroidery is priced by stitch count, so simple logos are economical but complex multi-color designs with lots of fill area get expensive fast. Screen printing is priced by color count and quantity — the more units you order, the cheaper each one gets. For very small quantities (a dozen or fewer), embroidery is often more cost-effective; for large runs, screen printing wins.

Durability

Properly cured screen prints last for years and survive countless washes. Embroidery is even more durable — done right, the stitching outlasts the garment itself. Both are reliable; the difference matters most on items that will be heavily used (uniforms) where embroidery has a slight edge.

The combination move

Some of our best-looking projects use both. Screen-printed back graphics with embroidered chest logos. Embroidered hats paired with screen-printed shirts in the same campaign. The two techniques complement each other rather than compete.
