Hats and Headwear: The Easiest Win in Custom Apparel

Hats and Headwear: The Easiest Win in Custom Apparel

If you’re going to test the waters with custom apparel for your business, start with hats. They’re the easiest win in the category — high visibility, broad appeal, comfortable price points, and forgiving of imperfect design. Here’s why hats punch above their weight as a marketing investment.

People actually wear them

Branded t-shirts often live in a drawer. Branded hoodies get worn around the house. Hats? People put on a baseball cap on the way out the door without thinking about it. Every customer who takes home one of your hats is potentially walking around your town with your logo on their head.

The styles that work for branding

Six-panel structured caps (the classic baseball cap) are the workhorse — universal fit, formal-ish, embroiders cleanly. Unstructured “dad hats” have surged in popularity for casual brands and lean younger. Snapbacks and trucker hats fit certain brand personalities. Beanies work great in our climate from October through April. Knowing your customer tells you which style.

Embroidery beats screen-printing for hats

You almost always want embroidery on a hat. The curved front panel doesn’t play nicely with screen printing, and the perception of quality is much higher with stitched logos. For trucker hats and certain casual styles, applied patches (with an embroidered or printed face and merrowed border) look great too.

Stock the right colors

Two or three colorways covers most of your audience. Black and a neutral (gray or khaki) handle most situations. If you want a bolder choice, add one in your brand color. Avoid trying to stock six different colorways from launch — you’ll end up with lots of inventory in colors nobody picks.

Selling and giveaways

Hats are great for giveaways (customer appreciation, raffles, employee events) but they’re also one of the few promotional items people will actually pay for if they’re well-designed. Many local businesses sell hats at a small profit and have customers wear them around town.
