How to Brief Your Printer: A Short Guide

How to Brief Your Printer: A Short Guide

The single biggest factor in whether a print job comes out right isn’t the printer’s skill or the paper stock — it’s the brief. The clearer the information we get up front, the less back-and-forth happens later and the better the final product looks. Here’s what helps us give you a great print, the first time.

Tell us what it’s for, not just what it is

“I need 500 flyers” and “I need 500 flyers to hand out at a trade show next month for our new product launch” are very different requests. The second one tells us about the lifespan (short), the environment (handled, stuffed in bags), the goal (drive booth traffic), and the deadline. All of that affects what paper, what finish, and even what size we’d recommend.

Send the right file format

The short answer: PDF. The long answer: a print-ready PDF with all fonts embedded, images at 300dpi, and bleeds set up properly (usually 0.125″ past the trim line). If you’re working in Canva or another design tool, export as “PDF for Print” or with crop marks. If you only have a JPG or a screenshot, tell us — we can often work with it but the conversation is different.

Be clear about color

Screens lie. The bright red on your monitor is probably not the bright red that comes off our press. If you have an exact color (a Pantone match for your logo, or a brand color from a style guide), share it. If you don’t, we’ll get you a proof so you can see what the actual ink looks like on the actual paper before we run the full job.

Tell us about the deadline

“As soon as possible” doesn’t help us plan. A real deadline does. Most jobs turn around in 3-7 business days; specialty work or large quantities can take longer. The earlier we know the date, the better we can hit it.

Walk in with these four things — the purpose, the file, the color, the deadline — and your project will get done faster and look better. We’ll handle the rest.

Let’s bring your project to life.
