Banners are one of those products where the wrong choice means your investment ends up in the dumpster after the first windy weekend. We see this every spring — someone orders a beautiful full-vinyl banner for an outdoor festival, and the first gust turns it into a sail that rips the grommets right out. Here’s how to pick the right material for the job.
Vinyl banners: the standard workhorse
13-ounce smooth vinyl is the most common banner material for a reason. It’s tough, weatherproof, holds bright color well, and it’s affordable. If you’re hanging a banner indoors, on a wall, on a fence in a sheltered spot, or for a short-term outdoor event in calm weather, vinyl is the right call. The print pops, the surface is smooth, and the price-per-square-foot is hard to beat.
Mesh banners: when wind is the enemy
The moment your banner is going up in an exposed outdoor location — over a road, on a chain-link fence, on a building face that catches wind — switch to mesh. Mesh banners have small perforations across the entire surface that let air pass through instead of acting like a sail. The color saturation is slightly lower than smooth vinyl (the mesh holes show as tiny dots), but the trade-off is worth it: a mesh banner stays put while a vinyl banner of the same size is fighting against you.
Sizing and hardware
Whatever material you pick, get the hardware right. Grommets every 18-24 inches around the perimeter for most sizes, and reinforced hems on every edge. For very large banners, we add pole pockets or extra reinforcement at the corners. Bungee cords beat zip ties for tying down — they have a little give that absorbs wind loads.
Lifespan expectations
A well-made vinyl banner in a reasonable environment will look great for 2-3 years. Mesh in heavy outdoor use will last about the same. Constant direct sun is the main killer — colors fade. If the banner is going to stay up year-round, ask us about UV-resistant inks.
Tell us where the banner is going, how big it needs to be, and how long it needs to last. We’ll match the material to the job.
